Battles Damaged Race Car To 4th Place Finish
Concord, N.C.
(6/23/09)
Austin Langenstein
had a busy night behind the wheel of the FIREFOLD.COM #7 “Young
Guns” Bandolero Tuesday night during Week 3 of the Summer Shoot-Out
Series at Lowes Motor Speedway.
After winning his
heat race earlier in the evening, defeating the #06 of last week’s
winner Matt Linker, everything looked to be on track for the feature
event.
Austin, who
started from 5th place in the feature, amid an impressive
group of “Young Guns” and “Outlaw” contenders, immediately drove the
#7 into 3rd place as the cars charged into turn one under
the green flag. He then began chasing the race leaders, Matt
Linker, who started on the outside pole, and Justin Carroll, in the
#57, who started 3rd and was now running in second place.
On lap 5 the race
was brought to a halt by a red flag when Austin McKee in the #80
flipped wildly down the front stretch, bringing out the first
caution of the evening. McKee, with assistance from the Safety
Crew, exited the wrecked race car, which was laying on its side in
turn one, unharmed and was finished for the evening.
On the restart,
“Outlaw” driver Chris Morgan in the #171 made heavy wheel to wheel
contact with the #7 as they entered turn one, but Austin was able
to hang on to 3rd position in the running order, fending
off numerous attempts by Lady Driver Annabeth Barnes in the #12 to
overtake him.
Linker and Carroll
continued to set a torrid pace while Austin had his hands full with
a battle of his own as the contact with the #171 bent the spindle on
the #7, making the car tight and hard to turn.
The difficult
handling of the car finally provided an opportunity for the #12 of
Barnes, who had started in 7th but was had now running in
4th position, to move past Austin into 3rd on
lap 14 of the 20 lap event. Realizing the limitations of his car,
Austin settled into 4th position and concentrated his
efforts on keeping the #03 of Luke Demis, running 5th at
the time, from taking the #4 position.
When the checker
flag fell it was the #06 of Matt Linker from Mt. Pleasant the winner
(2 in a row), with Concord, N.C. native Justin Carroll, in the #57,
in second attached to Linkers rear bumper. Finishing 3rd
was the #12 of Annabeth Barnes from Hiddenite, NC; her best finish
of the series; with Austin in the #7 finishing 4th, his
3rd top 5 finish in as many races, and Luke Demis, in
the #03, rounding out the top 5.
“We had a good car
this evening until that early caution when Chris Morgan and I
touched. From that point on I was just hanging on to salvage the
best finish possible”, quoted Austin.
“I knew the toe
got knocked out severely as I could tell by the alignment of my
steering wheel. The car got really tight and it was hard to turn in
the center. Annabeth drove me hard and I wanted to race her clean,
but with that bent spindle I could not free the car up enough when I
needed it. She drove a great race and it was good to see that for
her” added Austin.
“To come out of
here this evening with a 4th place finish with the
problems that developed, we will take it and move on to Week 4. Some
of the lap cars were a problem tonight clearing them, but I know
those guys were doing their best and that kept me on my toes all
evening. I was doing all that I could not to get pinned in behind
them and loose any more positions” Austin summed up.
“With this finish
I believe we will maintain the point lead but we still have some
work to do. The competition is tough this year here at the
Shoot-out”, Austin concluded.
