Langenstein has great run come
to an end!
Atlanta, Ga.
7/25/09
With over 70 cars
entered and drivers from 24 states and Canada represented the
Bandolero Nationals held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway was a
success.
Austin Langenstein
qualified 5th fastest amongst the group assembled and
with the draw set him was to start 10th in the 40 lap
feature event.
“Our car was great
on Thursday night and we made a few small changes during Fridays
open practice session that helped the car a lot. We were good and
then Dad made the decision to quit practice 4 hours early so we
could use the rest of the day to prepare the race car for the event
on Saturday”, Austin stated.
“We had a car that
was capable of the pole but with the late draw the track heated up
and it affected our speed a little”, Austin noted.
When the green
flag flew for the 40 lap Championship event Austin quickly made his
way to the 5th spot and settled in there for the time
being. With temperatures in the mid 90,s the race pace started to
take it on some of the competition.
“When we got to 5th
place and road there as the race wound down and on the caution flags
I noticed some of the leaders were opening up their roof hatches on
the parade laps to get some air inside of the cars. I knew that the
guys were struggling for cool air and they were getting tired”,
Langenstein mentioned.
When the green
flag flew with 5 laps to go, Austin was running in 5th
place behind Evan Bell, Matt Linker, Justin Carroll, and Austin
Hill.
With 2 to go
Linker and Carroll started to bang on each other for position. As
they entered turn 3 they got together and took each other out, as
Austin dove to the bottom of the track to clear the crash 4th
place running Austin Hill made a hard left and collected Austin in
the crash ending his fine run.
Evan Bell of
Buford, Ga. went on to collect the victory. Austin would be scored
in 13th place.
“I rode in 5th
and saved my car for the end and with 5 to go I could see what was
going to happen. Linker and Carroll have a lot of history together
and I knew that they were going to get together at some point in the
race. When they crashed each other I dove to the bottom of the race
track to miss them and was clear until Austin Hill got into me. I
knew the deal with Linker and Carroll battling for the National
Points lead it was going to happen at some point. To top thinks off
Hill was driving Linkers back up car so that had the recipe for
disaster,” Austin said.
“Austin Hill drove
me clean the entire race and I think he was trying to miss the crash
as well”, Austin noted.
Upon impact
Austin’s car jumped 6 feet into the air and landing hard on to the
chassis doing a lot of suspension damage.
The fun did not
stop there, as Linker and Carroll drove off from the crash under
yellow. As the 2 drivers entered the front stretch, Carroll hooked
Linker in the rear bumper which sent Linker into a series of
rollovers before coming to a rest in the catch fence entering turn
1. Austin Langenstein and Austin Hill were out of their cars at this
time looking over the damage saw this event happening. As Linker
came to a rest in the catch fence Langenstein and Hill ran down the
race track to assist Linker who was trapped in his race car.
“When we got to
Matt he was out cold. The safety crew finally arrived to the scene
and we moved out of their way so they could attend to Matt”, Austin
said.
Linker went to the
hospital where he checked out with a bruise to his ankle and a bump
to his head. Justin Carroll was disqualified for the event.
“We had a great run going and we had a
car that was capable of winning this event, it was a shame that we
got caught up in that mess on the race track,” Austin concluded.
