Safety Focus - CVSA Roadcheck 2007 Roadcheck 2007, sponsored by Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) with participation by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico) was conducted June 5-7. Certified inspectors at 1449 locations conducted 62,730 inspections in the 72 hour period. Results: 78.5 percent of vehicles passed inspection and 21.5 percent were placed out of service. Brakes were the largest reason for vehicles being being placed out of service at 54 percent (if you don't have your calculator handy, that's approximately 7,280 vehicles out of service for defective brakes). Recent training discoveries by the TruckSavvy.com Community: MGM Brake Tech MGM Brakes offers a comprehensive self study training program on service and spring brake chambers on their web site. The Brake Tech Self Study program includes lessons and tests covering maintenance and safety procedures relating to the repair, replacement, inspection and preventive maintenance of service chambers and spring brakes. Participants can send the tests back to MGM Brakes for grading and receive a free gift on successful completion. Phillips Heat Shrink Connector Training The third highest expense in many fleets and an aggravating cause of unscheduled downtime is electrical repairs - often caused by corrosion of wiring and connections. The most effective way to combat this is to be sure repair connections are sealed from the outside elements. Phillips has a series of videos that demonstrate correct use of heat shrink connectors to ensure quality, fix it once, repairs.
