The Same, Only Different - Stopping Distance Regulation Effective August 1, 2011

The long anticipated new stopping distance regulation went in to effect for vehicles manufactured on and and after August 1, 2011.

The new rule requires the vast majority of new heavy truck tractors to achieve a 30 percent reduction in stopping distance compared to former levels. For these heavy truck tractors (approximately 99 percent of the fleet), the amended standard requires those vehicles to stop in not more than 250 feet when loaded to their gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and tested at a speed of 60 miles per hour (mph).

And though the new regulation will bring some changes to truck specifications and maintenance recommendations, dramatic changes in operations and practices will not be required.

Links to manufacturer (truck and component) information and the NHTSA web site are available on the TruckSavvy.com Home page.  Go to New Stopping Distance Regulation heading and click on the individual links.
