B.R.A.K.E.S. - Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe!

Free behind-the-wheel training for teen drivers!

B.R.A.K.E.S., which stands for Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe, is a non-profit organization founded by NHRA Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert in memory of his two sons, Jon and James, who were killed in a car accident.

The mission of B.R.A.K.E.S. is to prevent injuries and save lives by training and educating teenage drivers and their parents about the importance of safe and responsible driving.

Consider, between 4,000 and 6,000 teenagers die in car accidents each year...

  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among American teenagers.
  • Teenagers are 400% more likely to die in a car crash than 25-34 year-old drivers.
  • In 2008 more than 350,000 teens were treated for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes.
  • The chance that a teen will be in at least one crash in the first three years of driving is 89.2%.

Inexperience is a leading cause of teen auto accidents and the B.R.A.K.E.S. organization’s aim is to provide behind-the-wheel training for teens through its free “Teen Pro-Active Driving School” which is designed to provide young drivers with the dynamic experience of handling a vehicle in adverse driving conditions, all in a controlled environment. In each four-hour session expert instructors educate students on the proper way to handle skids, panic stops, accident avoidance and driving with distractions.

The B.R.A.K.E.S Teen Pro-Active Driving school is designed to give young drivers the dynamic experience of handling a vehicle in adverse driving conditions in a controlled environment.  Professional driving instructors educate students on the proper way to handle skids, panic stops, accident avoidance and driving with distractions.  Students gain a better understanding of what a car can do, and in the process improve their skills and confidence behind the wheel.

Hands on experiences include:

  • Skid Pad - Every driver's biggest fear is slick road conditions.  We use our wet skid pad to teach the students techniques to properly recover from both oversteer (rear wheel) and understeer (front wheel) skids.

  • Panic Stops - This exercise is designed to teach the students the proper technique to stop a vehicle in the shortest distance while maintaining control.  Students will also review the A.B.S. (Anti-Lock Braking System) and its ability to keep the wheels from locking while pulsating the brake pressure..

  • Accident Avoidance - Ever had a dog run out in front of you?  Or another car suddenly swerve into your lane?  The accident avoidance course forces students to make a split second reaction to negotiate a quick, evasive lane change without losing control.

  • Distractions - In today's 24/7 world, drivers have far too many distractions - cell phones, text messaging, music, traffic, friends in the car.  Distracted driving is a very dangerous habit!  B.R.A.K.E.S. has designed an exercise that forces a driver to negotiate a tight, coned course while being distracted by the instructor to demonstrate just how dangerous distracted driving can be!This exercise focuses on weight transfer, hand position on the steering wheel and eye scanning.  Students will negotiate their vehicle around cones that are equally spaced apart.

  • Slalom - Many young drivers panic when they drop a wheel off the shoulder of the road, they over correct and then lose control of the car.  The drop wheel exercise shows students how to effectively and safely recover from a drop wheel by returning to the road and regaining control of the car.  (This course available during schools at zMAX Dragway only).

Schools are conducted on weekends at various locations around the country.
