B.R.A.K.E.S. Annual Benefit Dinner

Put On the B.R.A.K.E.S. Inc. Graduates 3,000th Student

B.R.A.K.E.S. - which stands for Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe - will host its 4th Annual Benefit Dinner September 15, 2011 at the Embassy Suites in Concord, NC.  The night will include dinner, cocktails, silent and live auctions, and live entertainment. All proceeds from the dinner will benefit Put on the B.R.A.K.E.S. which provides free hands on driver training to teens.

B.R.A.K.E.S., , is a non-profit organization founded by NHRA Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert in memory of his two sons, Jon and James, who were killed in a car accident.

The mission of B.R.A.K.E.S. is to prevent injuries and save lives by training and educating teenage drivers and their parents about the importance of safe and responsible driving.

Inexperience is a leading cause of teen auto accidents and the B.R.A.K.E.S. organization’s aim is to provide behind-the-wheel training for teens through its free “Teen Pro-Active Driving School” which is designed to provide young drivers with the dynamic experience of handling a vehicle in adverse driving conditions, all in a controlled environment. In each four-hour session expert instructors educate students on the proper way to handle skids, panic stops, accident avoidance and driving with distractions.

B.R.A.K.E.S. has conducted schools in four states and recently graduated the 3000th student. Since 2008, B.R.A.K.E.S. has trained over 3,000 students from 17 states and 2 countries.

"The dinner is our largest fund raiser of the year and we look forward to hosting our friends and fans as well as all our B.R.A.K.E.S. supporters. Its a great night where fans and the NHRA family can mingle and raise money for a great cause" said Doug Herbert NHRA Driver and Founder of B.R.A.K.E.S.

"Our goals are to double the number of teens we train in 2012, alleviate the waitlist, expand into other states, and be nationwide within the next five years." said Hebert.

B.R.A.K.E.S Teen Pro-Active Driving School

The B.R.A.K.E.S Teen Pro-Active Driving school is designed to give young drivers the dynamic experience of handling a vehicle in adverse driving conditions in a controlled environment.  Professional driving instructors educate students on the proper way to handle skids, panic stops, accident avoidance and driving with distractions.  Students gain a better understanding of what a car can do, and in the process improve their skills and confidence behind the wheel.

Hands on experiences include:

  • Skid Pad - Every driver's biggest fear is slick road conditions.  We use our wet skid pad to teach the students techniques to properly recover from both oversteer (rear wheel) and understeer (front wheel) skids.

  • Panic Stops - This exercise is designed to teach the students the proper technique to stop a vehicle in the shortest distance while maintaining control.  Students will also review the A.B.S. (Anti-Lock Braking System) and its ability to keep the wheels from locking while pulsating the brake pressure..

  • Accident Avoidance - Ever had a dog run out in front of you?  Or another car suddenly swerve into your lane?  The accident avoidance course forces students to make a split second reaction to negotiate a quick, evasive lane change without losing control.

  • Distractions - In today's 24/7 world, drivers have far too many distractions - cell phones, text messaging, music, traffic, friends in the car.  Distracted driving is a very dangerous habit!  B.R.A.K.E.S. has designed an exercise that forces a driver to negotiate a tight, coned course while being distracted by the instructor to demonstrate just how dangerous distracted driving can be!This exercise focuses on weight transfer, hand position on the steering wheel and eye scanning.  Students will negotiate their vehicle around cones that are equally spaced apart.

  • Slalom - Many young drivers panic when they drop a wheel off the shoulder of the road, they over correct and then lose control of the car.  The drop wheel exercise shows students how to effectively and safely recover from a drop wheel by returning to the road and regaining control of the car.  (This course available during schools at zMAX Dragway only).

Schools are conducted on weekends at various locations around the country.
